Documentation

During a recent expedition to The Bahamas, Dr. Andy Danylchuk (UMass Amherst), Dr. Aaron Adams (Bonefish & Tarpon Trust/Florida Institute of Technology), Dr. Jon Shenker (Florida Institute of Technology), and Zack Jud (Florida International University) reconfirmed that bonefish form massive spawning aggregations at very specific locations during specific lunar days. Using manual tracking and depth sensors, they also documented that bonefish use depths of greater than 160 feet (50 m) when spawning, after which they return quickly to shallow water. Collectively, this work will help identify sites throughout The Bahamas and elsewhere in Florida and the Caribbean where bonefish spawn and that need protection from habitat disturbance and overfishing.

Blending Into The Background

Kayak Angler showed up in the mail the other day and we were pleasantly surprised to see some of our gear (1976 Hat and SUNwt. Gloves) blending into the background of Old Town's back page advertisement for the Predator.

Reinforcement

12wt. gloves are designed primarily for sun protection and comfort.  We know that repeated stress from stripping fly line or backing can eventually cause fabric failure. That's why we suggest wrapping your stripping finger with Coban tape (shown above). We don't guarantee that it'll help you land a big permit, but it will provide added protection to your gloves while keeping your vital stripping fingers protected, thus increasing your effectiveness on the water.

Forty in WORKwt. Hand

Norway native Russell Jacobsen hoists a 40" Maine striper that took a well-used Coyote Crab in thin water and full sun. SUNwt. Mask and WORKwt. Gloves are essential even in early October on flats as far north as coastal Maine. Russell's big fish is in the running for SOTM (Slab of The Month) on Moldy Chum.

The Lost Tarpon

In November 1982, two fisherman in Portugal caught a fish that they had never seen before.
The only existing proof of the "accidental capture" of the tarpon was an old photograph.  Another tarpon was caught in 1973 in Tejo River (Lisbon) but no photo was taken, only a replica in the Museum Vasco da Gama in Lisbon.

José Rodrigues leaves his hometown with a friend to try and catch a large tarpon on the other side of the Atlantic. This is the trailer of the documentary "The Lost Tarpon," with José Rodrigues, Luís Mira and Leonel Henriques.

SILVER LINING Poster

SILVER LINING is a film by Will Benson that highlights proposed dredging in an area that many watermen view as the epicenter of a prehistoric Key West tarpon migration.  12wt. is proud to be a sponsor.  The trailer should be available soon.
